Hauwen — the cut. Meyer calls it the chief element of the knightly art of fencing and gives it a chapter of its own. The video-book combines an e-book with that text and a playlist of 16 videos: four chief strikes, nine secondary or reversed strikes, and five master strikes. All exactly as it stands in the original book of 1570 — page by page, move by move.
For Meyer the Haw — the cut — is the chief element of the knightly art of fencing. Not one element among many, but the central one. Chapter four is therefore the most practical part of the whole treatise: what you learn here you use in every chapter that follows and in every encounter.
Meyer does not teach the cuts as a list of blows. He sets them out as a system. The four chief strikes form the foundation everything else grows from. The nine secondary or reversed strikes show what can be done with that foundation once the direction or the side is turned around. And the five master strikes — Zornhau, Krumphau, Zwerchhau, Schielhau and Scheitelhau — are the ones that answer an incoming attack and strike in the same motion; they are how you recognise a fencer who has actually mastered the system.
The video-book contains every instruction Meyer gives on striking. Complete and unabridged.
How the video-book works
The video-book is two separate products and the link between them: a PDF e-book with the text, and a playlist of 16 videos on our streaming platform. The videos are not a loose extra — they follow the written form page by page and move by move.
You can work with it two ways. Read the text and use the videos to check what each passage looks like in motion. Or simply follow the videos and pick up the teaching quickly, without wrestling with period language first. Both lead to the same place: the authentic instruction of one of the greatest sword masters of the sixteenth century, studied at your own pace.
What the video-book contains
Who it is for
For fencers at every level. A beginner finds here the system the rest of Meyer's work grows out of; an experienced fencer gets to measure cuts he has been throwing for years against what Meyer actually writes about them. And for instructors it is ready material for a whole block of lessons.
Presented by Fencer's Guild sword master Petr Turya together with his colleague, sword master Ondrej Drtil. All videos are in English.
The video-book is not a substitute for training or for an instructor's guidance. The performances follow Meyer's text and keep to its reading.
